چکیده

Background: Histomoniasis is a disease caused by Histomonas meleagridis, flagellated protozoan that can cause severe necrotizing hepatitis and typhlitis in several bird species. The has cosmopolitan distribution. In experimental infection, peacocks (Pavo spp.) showed susceptibility to histomoniasis, however there are few reports on natural histomoniasis this northeastern Brazil, about its occurrence avian species scarce nonexistent peacocks. Therefore, report aims describe the epidemiological clinicopathological aspects of case peacock cristatus) Brazilian semiarid region.Case: A 3-month-old male with history apathy anorexia was attended Veterinary Hospital Universidade Federal Rural do Semi-Árido (UFERSA), Mossoró, RN, Brazil. animal raised extensively farm without basic sanitary measures, also living animals different After clinical examination, which intense weight loss were confirmed, submitted emergency therapeutic no improvement died. At necropsy, diffuse bilateral multifocal coalescent observed. Fragments organs collected 10% formaldehyde buffered phosphate-saline buffer for histopathological analysis cecal content microbiological analysis. Histopathology cecum revealed transmural associated myriads trophozoites morphologically compatible meleagridis. same microorganisms observed association lesions, allowed diagnosis histomoniasis. Also, bacterium Pantoea agglomerans isolated from content.Discussion: macroscopic microscopic findings first recording semi-arid region Rio Grande Norte. an extensive breeding management, such as use anthelmintics, may favor infection nematode Heterakis gallinarum, that’ transmits contamination, begins orofecal route, happens through ingestion eggs contaminated H. meleagridis pass gastrointestinal tract, reaching ceca causing lesions organ, we case. Distribution of chewing lice upon the polygynous peacock Pavo cristatus.

An opportunistic survey of louse distribution upon the peacock Pavo cristatus was undertaken following a cull of 23 birds from an English zoo. After complete skin and feather dissolution, 2 species of lice were retrieved, Goniodes pavonis and Amyrsidea minuta. The distribution of both louse species could be described by a negative binomial model. The significance of this is discussed in relatio...

The metabolic cost of walking on an incline in the Peacock (Pavo cristatus)

Altering speed and moving on a gradient can affect an animal's posture and gait, which in turn can change the energetic requirements of terrestrial locomotion. Here, the energetic and kinematic effects of locomoting on an incline were investigated in the Indian peacock, Pavo cristatus. The mass-specific metabolic rate of the Indian peacock was elevated on an incline, but this change was not dep...

Complete Genome Sequence of a Newcastle Disease Virus Isolated from Wild Peacock (Pavo cristatus) in India

We report here the complete genome sequence of a Newcastle disease virus (NDV) isolated from a wild peacock. Phylogenetic analysis showed that it belongs to genotype II, class II of NDV strains. This study helps to understand the ecology of NDV strains circulating in a wild avian host of this geographical region during the outbreak of 2012 in northwest India.

Characterization and Sequencing of a Genotype XII Newcastle Disease Virus Isolated from a Peacock (Pavo cristatus) in Peru

Here, we report the first complete sequence and biological characterization of a Newcastle disease virus (NDV) isolated from a peacock in South America (NDV/peacock/Peru/2011). This isolate, classified as genotype XII in class II, highlights the need for increased surveillance of noncommercial avian species.

Safety of fenbendazole in common peafowl (Pavo cristatus).

The present study was undertaken to find out the safety levels of fenbendazole in common peafowl. This bird, raised on aviaries and zoos, can be severely parasitized with Ascaridia galli (enteric worms) and Syngamus trachea (gapeworm) along with other parasitic worms. Fenbendazole is a highly effective benzimidazole-class anthelmintic in animals. The objective of this work was to provide target...
